Why Run

Why, where, when, how do you run? These are some reasons why I run, and yes, this is me channeling my inner Beat Poet and entering flow state stream of consciousness.

Why, where, when, how do you run?

  • Sometimes, I run towards; othertimes[1], I run away. Less often, I run backwards, and more often than not, I run in place.
  • I run in the morning, afternoon, at night, and occasionally whilst the city sleeps.
  • I run alone; I run with ghosts; I run following the footsteps of those who came before, while leaving footsteps for those who come after. Sometimes, I run with others; those times, we run together. I treasure those runs.
  • I run for you. I run for me. We run for each other. Sometimes, I run after you, and sometimes, you run after me. Sometimes, we run apart, othertimes, we run towards each other. We try not to run into one another.
  • I run when I feel good, bad, indifferent. I run in sickness and in health. I run when I should and when I shouldn't. I run because it's good for me (most of the time).
  • I run because the doctor says so; I run against doctor's orders.[2]
  • I run fast, I run slow, I run efficiently[3]. I definitely could run better, but I could run worse. I always run one step at a time.
  • I run physically, mentally, metaphorically. Sometimes, I run, and I don't get anywhere at all. Othertimes, I run nowhere and end up...somewhere. Sometimes, I don't run, but my thoughts do, and when that happens, they tend to run away from me. Sometimes, I run after to chase them down. I call this a running train of thought.
  • I run up mountains[4], down valleys, across streams, creeks, and other small, traversable[5] water features. I run roads, trails, greenways, sidewalks, treadmills, tracks. I run everywhere and nowhere.
  • I occasionally run jauntily, with a bounce, skip to my step; othertimes, I run ploddingly, disjointedly. These runs are heartbreaking and necessary.
  • I run light as a feather, and I run heavy as a stone. Some runs are easier than others.
  • I run because I can, and if I can, then so can you. This reason to run should be higher up on the list.
  • I run to music, melody, rhythm, and rhyme. I run to the beat of my own drum. I run to birdsong, raindrops, and the pitter-patter of my own footsteps. I never run to podcasts or audiobooks, but that's a personal preference. I run to what works for me, which may be different than what works for you.
  • I run because if I don't then I'm not a runner. I would be someone who doesn't run.
  • I run to remind others that to get somewhere or to get nowhere you don't need gas or electricity. You have everything you need. You are everything you need. You are more than enough.
  • I run because it's not about the destination - it's about the journey.
  • I run to find my center, to find my zen, to discover what I'm capable of, and to see how far I can go.
  • I run to answer the questions: "Who am I?", "Who have I been?", "Who will I be?"

These are some reasons why I run. Why do you run?
